A tour in the hilly and mountainous villages built of stone and wood... with people who are simple and hospitable, born in the multiculturalism of Thrace trying to survive in the face of political tricks and religious obscurantism in this forgotten part of Europe will fascinate you.  

 

 Riverlands’ guides pick us up from our hotels in the morning leaving behind us the suburban pine forest of Xanthi. We enter a road naked now from the overgrazing. The main occupation of the locals is the breeding of goats and the tobacco cultivation. We arrive at the biggest village of the area, Ehinos, passing through many small tobacco fields. There we have a break for coffee or tea and visit the Muslim mosque. Afterwards we continue our tour  through a spectacular route of  oak and beech to get to the most remote pomac village in the prefectrure of Xanthi, Kottani, near the greek-bulgarian borders. From there we begin a one hour and a half hike alongside Kompsatos river heading for the ruins of the abandoned village Koundouro and back. At Kottani we stop for a delicious lunch at the traditional tavern and then follow the main road back to Xanthi.
