The mountainous region of Drama and Xanthi is covered by the Rhodope Mountains, the second longest after the Pindos, sierra of Greece. The Rhodope Mountains, a natural boundary between Greece and Bulgaria is one of the most valuable systems in the Balkan Peninsula and Europe. Millions of years of geological and climatic changes led to the formation of isolated, smaller or larger habitat areas of particular ecological, botanical and zoological interest. The area provides food and shelter for many species of birds and large mammals such as bear, wolf, deer, roe deer, wild boar which live and reproduce in the dense forests and extensive spruce, beech, oak and pine forest. Five raptor species breed in the mountains of Rhodopi; the Egyptian vulture, the golden eagle, the peregrine falcon and the owl. The rivers and streams of Sierra Rhodopi are the life - giver of the plethora of flora and fauna.
Riverlands’ guides pick us up from our hotel in the morning and head towards the village of Stavroupoli and then to the village Livaditis. Shortly after the last houses of the village starts the marked trail that leads to the base of the waterfall. The hike is extremely interesting as it unfolds between a dense forest of beech and birch. Nothing reveals the existence of the waterfall, except the sound of water falling from a height of 40 meters, making the hiker look forward to the time that he will face this magical creation of nature. The trail returning to the main road is uphill but is as beautiful, as our slow pace reveals the uniqueness of the forests of the Rhodope. When we reach the main road we return by car back to Stavroupoli and then head down to Xanthi following a secondary steep road having the chance to see some of the wild horses of the now abandoned villages of Livera and Kromniko and stoping at the viewing point for a panoramic view of Nestos river.
