The mountainous region of Drama and Xanthi is covered by the Rhodope Mountains, the second longest after the Pindos, sierra of Greece. The Rhodope Mountains, a natural boundary between Greece and Bulgaria is one of the most valuable systems in the Balkan Peninsula and Europe. Millions of years of geological and climatic changes led to the formation of isolated, smaller or larger habitat areas of particular ecological, botanical and zoological interest. The area provides food and shelter for many species of birds and large mammals such as bear, wolf, deer, roe deer, wild boar which live and reproduce in the dense forests and extensive spruce, beech, oak and pine forest. Five raptor species breed in the mountains of Rhodopi; the Egyptian vulture, the golden eagle, the peregrine falcon and the owl. The rivers and streams of Sierra Rhodopi are the life-giver of the plethora of flora and fauna.
Riverlands’ guides pick us up from our hotel in the morning and head to the village of Stavroupoli. There our tour begins heading north towards the village of Paranesti, Drama where we travel alongside one of Nestos river tributaries, Arkoudorema(the bear stream). We pass the villages of Prassinada and Dipotama and arrive at the waterfall of Ag. Varvara with the majestic natural pool. From there we continue to the Byzantine aged stone made bridge and the spectacular stone carved praying place of the Holy Spirit. After a short picnic break we continue our tour towards the breath taking waterfalls of Lepida and Skotinou. We hike the 700 m trail from the road to get to the waterfalls. From there we begin our journey back to Stavroupoli.
